Hitachi Names Howard Shearer President of Hitachi Canada Ltd.

BRISBANE, Calif., and ONTARIO, Canada, February 1, 2001 – Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., (NYSE: HIT) today announced the appointment of Howard Shearer as president of Hitachi Canada Ltd., succeeding Masakazu Hamada who will return to Japan as manager, International Computer Systems Sales Division, Information & Computer Systems The appointments are effective Feb 21st.

Mr. Shearer, 50, most recently was vice president and general manager of Hitachi Canada Ltd., semiconductor sales and a member of the Hitachi Canada board, positions to which he was appointed in 1999. Before that, he had served as general manager of semiconductor sales since 1990. He joined Hitachi Canada in 1984 as a major account manager. Previously, he was employed by Texas Instruments. He holds a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Hamada, 48, has been president of Hitachi Canada since 1995. He previously served as manager of the International Operations Division (Information Systems Division) of Hitachi, Ltd. From 1986 to 1991, he served in management capacities with Hitachi Europe and Hitachi Data Systems. He joined Hitachi in 1975 serving in the International Operations Group, overseeing export of thermal power plants. Mr. Hamada is a 1975 graduated of Tokyo Metropolitan University, where he majored electrical engineering.
