HITACHI AMERICA AWARDS TSUNEO TANAKA SCHOLARSHIP TO PAOLA URGILES OF SLEEPY HOLLOW

TARRYTOWN, NY, June 6, 2006 -Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT,) today announced that Paola Urgiles of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., has been named the Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship winner for 2006. The Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship program is awarded to a student at Sleepy Hollow High School who demonstrates academic excellence, involvement in community, and financial need. Hitachi America’s Eastern Region Center is located in Tarrytown, New York, adjacent to Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County, N.Y.

The Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship was established in 1986 by Tsuneo Tanaka, the then president of Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based, Hitachi, Ltd., one of the world’s leading technology companies. The first scholarship was awarded in 1986 and was renamed in 1998 in memory of Mr. Tanaka who served two terms as president of Hitachi America.

“Hitachi America is proud to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Hitachi Scholarship at Sleepy Hollow High School and our partnership with the Public Schools of the Tarrytown”, said Masahide Tanigaki, president and CEO of Hitachi America.

“Ms Urgiles is truly an outstanding young woman who has demonstrated leadership, academic excellence, and community service. We are honored to present her with the Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship.”

Ms. Urgiles, a senior and member of the National Honor Society, was awarded a 4-year $10,000 scholarship. She will attend Georgetown University this fall to study government and public policy. Academically ranked in the top 5% of her class and a 2005 AP Scholar with Distinction, Ms Urgiles is an active volunteer in her community at Phelps Memorial Hospital and with “Students Advocating for Youth and Children (SAYC). At Sleepy Hollow High School, she also is president of the Latin American Student Organization, a member of Shadow and Substance (Literary Magazine), captain of the Soccer Team and a violinist in the orchestra
