Diversity Enriches Us All

Working in Silicon Valley offers us opportunities to immerse ourselves in high tech, but also to explore multicultural insights.

Hitachi America R&D’s talented researchers are from a variety of backgrounds. The team comes together to share new perspectives, benefit from a great talent pool and, more importantly, create great products and solutions. While we work hard, we never forget to appreciate our diversity.

From Chinese New Year to Japanese Hanami to Indian Diwali, here are a few of the events from this year that brightened the workplace and improved communication among those from different cultural backgrounds.

At our Chinese New Year celebration, Chinese researchers shared information about the Ben Ming Nian (zodiac birth year) story, which refers to the year of the zodiac animal in which one was born. A Chinese character quiz and a chopstick challenge were both a big success and very popular.

In Japan, people celebrated the Hanami (cherry blossom festival) in the Spring. It is the most popular seasonal event in Japan. We learned from Japanese researchers that Spring serves as both a season for new beginnings as well as farewells. We explored the art of Origami, and shared delicious Maccha tea with Japanese tradition of tea ceremony.

In India, Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most important festivals. To celebrate this festival, our Indian researchers explained the story of Diwali. They taught us a traditional sportbased tabletop game called “Carrom“ and shared information about the famous Mehendi hand painting.

Our other team members will introduce Arab and Persian cultures soon. Our hard work continues, but so does the fun!
